I heard about Rochelle Adonis from a friend living in Perth and after checking blog reviews, I had to try it!
Owner Rochelle originated from Canada and moved in Sydney where she trained as a pastry chef. She worked in an exclusive cake boutique in London, baking for British and Saudi Royal families before receiving an invitation to work in the pastry kitchen of luxurious Hotel Sacher in Vienna. After spending some time as the head pastry chef in Matt Moran’s celebrated Aria, she moved to Perth and started her own dessert salon.
Rochelle Adonis serves high tea on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 12 noon and 2pm. On weekends, there are 4 slots: 10am, 12 noon, 2pm and 4pm. Bookings are essential as Rochelle Adonis only prepare high tea for confirmed bookings (50% deposit needs to be made). Because I live in Singapore, I dropped Rochelle Adonis 2 emails but there was no response. I had no choice but to trouble Mom (who lives in Perth) to make the reservation and pay the deposit on my behalf. Rochelle Adonis should look into this matter to prevent loss of business from tourists!
The elegantly decorated salon is quite small; long communal table with high chairs took up most of the space. We sat by the window seating as we wanted to chat in private, and watch the world go by. There was only one waitress on duty, who was friendly and personable.
High tea costs AUD $49 per pax which includes 2 courses of savories and sweets, a palate cleanser and 2 beverage choices. The menu changes daily and the chef creates everything from scratch, using only the best seasonal produce.
Loose leaf teas are from The Seventh Duchess while French Press Coffee is from Remedy, a local roaster in Perth.
Drinks are served in pretty, mismatched tableware.
I had Apple and Cinnamon “Turkish Garden” while Mom had coffee. The authentic Turkish blend tea has a grand aroma, but tastes subtle.
Behold! Beautifully plated scrumptious savories which are oh-so-fine! Oh, by the way, I like that Rochelle Adonis gives 2 servings of each sweet and savory, so that we don’t have to cut it into 2 for sharing(unlike Koko Black)
–Chicken Pistachio and Cranberry Terrine served with Apple and Dill Salad: The terrine went very well with salad. I loved the refreshing bursts of flavors from the apple while the crunchy nuts added texture.
–Fish and Chips on Mushy Peas: A modern and innovative take on the usual fish and chips with mayonnaise. Notice that the chips are wrapped around the fish?
–Purple Carrot and Lemongrass soup with carrot and ginger cream. A healthy savory soup with a delicate flavour to warm up the soul on a cold winter afternoon.
–Triple cream, Goat Cheese Mousse with Beetroot, Beetroot Sponge and Balsamic glaze tantalized my taste buds with its sweet and acid flavors.
–Cucumber and Dill Aioli Sandwich
Strawberry and Watermelon Sorbet to cleanse our palates…
The sweets are a visual treat!
Rochelle Adonis Sundae with Salted Caramel Sauce. Dig into this decadent dessert to discover brownie layered with salted caramel. I was surprised to see hazelnuts at right at the bottom, but after nibbling on them, I appreciated their presence as it gave my taste buds a break from the decadently sweet brownie.
Mixed Berry Galette with Vanilla Mascarpone adorned with an edible flower, flaked beautifully with each bite. Apple and Rhubard Crumble Tart was decent, but I would have preferred a more buttery tart base.
I am not a fan of the traditional Thai Mango sticky Rice Dessert, so I was rather disappointed that is was part of the dessert plate. However, Rochelle Adonis rendition blew me away! Slightly sweetened coconut rice went harmoniously with Passion Fruit Curd, Mango and Finger Lime.
For busy folks, you can pop in and take away desserts to enjoy at home. Gluten-free cakes are also available.
Some unique sweets that attracted me were: Raspberry+Coconut cake, Fig+Ricotta cake, Orange+Chocolate buttermilk cake and Mandarin+almond cake.
There is a wide range of popular, classic desserts to choose from: White Chocolate Butter Cake, Rochelle Adonis Signature Dark Chocolate Cake, Brownies, Gluten-free chocolate cakes, Apple + Cinnamon Tea cake, Macarons, Poached Seasonal Fruit Friand, Raspberry Jam Tart, Raspberry Curd Tart, Dark Chocolate Cherry Tarts, Passion fruit curd Tart, Lemon curd Tart, Caramelized Hazelnut Tart, Caramelized Pecan Trat and Lammington.
I took away a Salted Caramel Chocolate Mousse. Sweet dreams are made of these!
All in all, mom and I thoroughly enjoyed our high tea experience at Rochelle Adonis. Imaginative recipes, excellent execution and genuine service – a winning formula that will charm any patron. I am so glad to have discovered this gem and would definitely revisit if I travel to Perth again!
