Peony Jade Mooncakes 2014

It’s that time of the year again! Time to abandon diet plans and indulge in delightful round pastries- Mooncakes 🙂  This Mid Autumn Festival, Peony Jade’s culinary team led by Chef Wong and dim sum master chef are proud to present a range of mooncakes that are nostalgic and intriguing.

Peony Jade’s uncompromising commitment to quality and excellence is truly impressive. Mooncakes are made daily and exclude artificial flavorings, stabilizers and preservatives. My tastebuds reveled in the freshness of each pastry.

Purists will appreciate quintessential Traditional Baked Premium Mother of Pearl White Lotus Paste with Single Yolk ($33 for 2 pieces, $59 for 4 pieces). The thin crust encases smooth white lotus paste, balanced out by the salty egg yolk. Low in sugar, the pastry’s sweetness level was spot on.

Another crowd-pleaser is definitely the award-winning signature Teochew Orh Ni Baked Mooncakes, rated by The Straits Times in 2011 as the best in its category. Yes, the hype is true! Every aspect about this mooncake is stellar, from the flaky crisps exterior, to its refined moist yam and pumpkin filling. I highly recommend Teochew Orh Ni Mooncake with Premium fragrant Golden Pumpkin and Single Egg yolk ($33 for 2 pieces, $59 for 4 pieces).

I’ve to admit I was very contented with the intriguing snowskin collection. Durian lovers will enjoy Peony Jade’s Black Thorn Durian Nonya Mooncake in Coconut Mini Snowskin ($76 for 8 pieces). Made with an uncommon breed of premium durian from Penang, the cotton candy blue mooncakes are packed with creamy and sweet filling that ends on a slightly bitter note.

We were especially taken by the sorbet hues and delicate flavor of the Mini Snowskin Fragrant Honey Williams Pear, organic Apricot and Raspberry mooncakes ($49 for 8 pieces). Pears and apricots are imported from France, while raspberries hail from California. Pleasantly tart, it’s perfect for those who don’t like things too sour.

Returning due to popular demand, the elegant Mini Snowskin Mango Philadelphia cheese mooncake ($58 for 8 pieces) has an engaging marriage of mango cubes injected into light-textured cream cheese.

Oh decadence! Mini Snowskin Chocolate Salted Caramel Glaze Banana and Walnuts Mooncake ($49 for 8 pieces) is an appealing combo of bitter dark Valrhona chocolate and naturally sweet Del Monte banana. Flavor leans towards the sweet side, but is balanced by salted caramel and crunchy walnuts.

Peony Jade’s mooncakes are available at the 2 Peony Jade Restaurants and 14 other locations
