With the Marina Bay waterfront as the backdrop, tall ceilings, sweeping arches, plush silk carpets and well-appointed furniture, there’s no doubt The Clifford Pier is a stunner.
The historic landmark was the first port of call for immigrants in the 1930s. From the 1950s, the car park beside the Pier was transformed into a hawker centre at night. Staying true to the site’s rich history, The Clifford Pier serves reinterpretations of classic Singaporean fare.
The festive afternoon tea ($43), served on a quintessential 3-tier stand, is inspired by distinctively local flavors, curated by Singaporean Cookbook author Shermay Lee. Its inclusive of a choice of one beverage ( Kopi Kosong, Teh Tarik, Air Bundung, English Breakfast tea, Earl Grey Tea, Moroccan Mint Tea, Café Latte, Cappuccino or Espresso) which is refillable. A live pianist serenade diners with his melodies and deep vocals.
The Kurobuta Pork sandwiched between the Kong Bao Bao was flavorful, but a tad too dry and tough. Stuffed with generous chucks of succulent flesh doused in chilli sauce, the Chilli Crab Bao fared much better.
Warm, fluffy Buttermilk and Tropical Fruits Scones sits on the first tier. A variety of condiments are available to accompany the scones- cream cheese, salted butter, berry jam, pineapple jam and kaya. The chilli is meant for the Kueh Pie Tee.
Handcrafted savory treats occupy the second tier, namely Hae Bee Hiam French Toast, Otak Sandwich, Mini Po Piah Wrapped in Handmade Nonya Egg Skin, Kueh Pie Tee, Bak Kwa Jam Sandwich and Nonya Chicken Curry & Roti Jala Wrap.
Dainty sweets include Red Velvet Swiss Roll, Roselle Linzer Cookies, Bundung Macaron, Mixed Fruit Cake and Pear Tart. Most outstanding of all was the pear tart- mildly saccharine pears encased in buttery tart base and glittered with crumble. The bundung macaron deserves a mention too. Textures were spot on-slightly chewy macaron shells with a crisp exterior and creamy rose centre. If only it wasn’t overwhelming sweet.
Overall, we felt that the food only average, but gorgeous ambiance and attentive service made up for it. Festive afternoon tea set will be available until 31st Dec 2014
