SUD, an intimate 45 seat restaurant, is an Italian gem located at 219 King Street Melbourne. It can get busy here during dinnertime with execs who work in the area, so it you’re after a quiet meal; this isn’t the place for you.

Before exploring the menu, do take a look at the daily specials on the blackboard, which offers the latest imports from Italy and fresh seasonal produce.

While waiting for the food to arrive, we had bread accompanied with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip. Since the hubs can’t get enough of Italian coffee, he ordered an espresso (AUD 4.50).

Tagliere di Salumi (AUD 19) came highly recommended by the wait staff. The mouth-watering platter comprises of Lonzo, Caciatore and Finocchio and petite olives, all imported from Italy.

Portion of main courses are massive, so do take that into consideration to avoid over-ordering.

We were swept off our feet by the Filetto di Manzo (AUD 39), a juicy, well-seasoned and full-flavoured Prime Black Angus steak with a splash of horseradish and red wine jus. The sidekicks were exceptional too. The potato roesti possessed an additive crunchy exterior while the tomato sugetto’s tanginess lightened up the rich dish.

The Anatara (AUD 38) is shockingly excellent value-2 hulking duck legs! Both were pan roasted to an appetizing shade of golden brown, with meat so tender, it separates from the bone easily. The curing was skilfully done, such that the flesh was flavorsome yet not overly salty. Sliced beetroot, potato gratin, Asian mushrooms and porcini mushroom jus complement the bird.

One does not leave an Italian establishment without trying Italy’s quintessential dessert! SUD’s Tiramisu (AUD 15) has more espresso than liquors, hence didn’t quite hit the spot for me. Its airy mascarpone is commendable and I liked how the coffee and liquor mixture overflowed like squeezed sponge with each mouthful.

Service at SUD is flawless, attentive, but not intrusive, professional but still warm and genuine. Do note that SUD does not open during weekends (except on Sat for private events only), and reservations are recommended to avoid disappointment.
