Located on the first floor of Bay Hotel, the modest all-day dining restaurant and bar, STREET 50, has recently launched a new menu, the Great Singapore Savour, which comprises of 20 interpretations of local street food.
Most of us would have tried Coffee Pork Ribs at Zi Char stalls before, but have you come across Coffee Wings ($7.90)? STREET 50 serves the prized mid-wing, deep-fried with Chef Kelvin’s homemade Hong Kong Style coffee jam (pictured above). I love this rendition!
The salted egg yolk fervor is still going strong. STREET 50 stays on trend with 2 salted egg yolk dishes The chef takes inspiration from a classic Swiss dish, Cordon Bleu (meat wrapped around cheese filling) to conceive a hit favorite- Salted Egg Lava Chicken Breast ($9.90). Instead of cheese, homemade salted egg yolk paste, which flows like a river, is encased in juicy chicken breast meat. Rave alert!
The Soft Shell Crab with Salted Egg Dip ($7.90) didn’t quite appeal to me. Although the crustacean was well-fried and crispy, the salted egg yolk cream sauce was too sweet for my liking.
Fresh and succulent prawns, paired with fragrant cereal, were simply a match made in heaven. The accompanying wasabi dip was spicy enough to give a pleasant burn. Cereal Prawns with Wasabi Dressing ($9.90) is certainly well executed here!
For something more substantial, there’s Claypot Assam Fish Head ($18.90). Unlike most places that use commercial, ready-made assam paste, STREET 50 makes theirs from scratch, using tomato puree. The resulting gravy is light and sweet, and complements the fish’s fresh meat very well. Diners who are adverse to spicy food can enjoy this too, as its heat level is mild. Personally, I prefer this over the traditional Assam Fish Head, as I’m not a fan of curries that are sour and too spicy, as one will not be able to appreciate the freshness of the meat.
I’m fond of the twists on local dishes, as they are unique and yet familiar at the same time. Prices are so affordable, and with $50 spent, you’ll get to enjoy a complimentary Fresh Coconut Malibu, a refreshing dessert of fresh young coconut with mixed fruits and coconut ice cream.
During the Great Singapore Sale period from now till 14th August 2016, you’ll stand a chance to win the following when you spend more than $50:
