Despite its iconic familiarity, it’s still easy to be impressed by Mandarin Oriental’s Axis Bar and Lounge afternoon tea. The menu refreshes monthly and for August, the luxury hotel celebrates Singapore 51st birthday with a diverse assortment of dainty treats inspired by our nation’s multicultural heritage.
As the pianist serenades, relax and cool down with a glass of diced Mango Ice Jelly and sago, buried beneath a layer of fine coconut foam.
The second course, a canapés platter, consists of Mini Cha Siu Bao that boasts buttery soft pastry that crumbles in the mouth, melon wrapped in translucent silvers of Aged Parma Ham and Shrimp Tartlet brightened up with lemon aioli. The shrimp, marinated with sambal, will jolt your taste buds awake.
Replacing the usual finger sandwiches is a unique collection of Asian carbs. From left to right, we have succulent Crab Mini Pita Pocket dotted with dollops of salted egg yolk sauce, Roasted Cantonese Chicken Wheel with ginger chili spread, Otah Otah Sub with chicken floss and Asparagus Tofu Maki Rolls with Wasabi mayonnaise. I like how the chef merges the ingredients to create impeccable and engaging combinations.
We unanimously agreed that the Nonya Curry Puff was excellent- crispy and flaky pastry on the outside, while remaining chewy inside. Its fillings packed a spicy punch too! The Braised Beef Rendang Pie was not as outstanding as the Nonya Curry Puff, but still decent.
What’s afternoon tea without scones? Sink your teeth into elegant Tahitian Vanilla and Bundung Rosella varieties, served with condiments such as clotted cream, berry compote and lemon curd.
Desserts are presented on a quintessential 3-tier stand and floral plates. Guests can expect captivating handcrafted desserts that are utterly delicious.
Cassia Baba Yoghurt Verrine
Green Pistachio Raspberry Freshness
Mara de bois Strawberry Cheese Tart
Ondeh Ondeh Maracon
Caramel Banana Pound
I particularly adore the potent Mojito Lolliopo and the amazingly moist Caramel Banana Pound.
