Congratulations to Peony Jade for receiving the Bib Gourmand Award from Singapore’s inaugural Michelin Guide 2016! During the latest tasting, we had the opportunity to sample their interpretation of Hairy Crabs, tantalizing savory creations as well as hand-crafted moon cake masterpieces.
The meal commenced with an appetizing dish of bull frog, deep-fried for that addictive crispy exterior, then viciously seasoned with spiced fragrant salt.
Our bodies were nourished and tummies warmed with an outstanding soup of Chicken Consomme with Conch and Maca Root. A marvel of Cantonese brewing skills indeed!
Eating healthy does not mean eating boring. Be captivated by Chef Liew’s signature garoupa, generously coated with black truffle and served with asparagus. It looks simple enough, but is nothing short of amazing. The truffle umami flavours goes so well with the snowy fish fillets and enthralls the tongue- no judgment if you reach out for seconds! I can see this appealing to kids and the elderly as well. Portion is sufficient for 6 diners.
Fans of the autumn delicacy will be glad to know that you can enjoy the prized crustacean at Peony Jade from early October to end November. This time, Peony Jade presents the crab enclaved within a harden salt shell; diners can have some fun breaking the shell open to reveal the enticing crabs. In addition to baking the crabs with salt, herbs are also incorporated to achieve an irresistible flavour. Mark your calendars!
Springy egg noodles tossed in Scallions oil, is a refined and lighter alternative to the usual Asian carb choice. This fills you up, but won’t leave your stomach feeling overwhelmed. Excellent!
For desserts, we were treated to an avalanche of mooncakes. Baked varieties that should not be missed are the inventive Mini Molten Matcha Salted Egg Yolk mooncakes and signature Flaky Orh Ni Mooncakes. The former, a new creation, boasts impeccably balanced green tea and salted egg yolk core , that flows endlessly when served warm. Peony Jade’s Flaky Orh Ni Mooncakes do not need much introduction. They award-winning mooncakes, which has been highly sought ever since 1988, exemplifies timeless comfort with its feather-light flaky pastry, and delectable yam-pumpkin filling.
Baked Mooncakes are also available for the those who prefer the good ol’ classics.
My top pick for the snowskin selection will definitely be the Durian Moon cakes, prepared with 100% premium Mao Shan Wang durian pulp, envelop in organic pandan snowskin. A tad pricy, but its worth every cent (and calorie)!
Those who like some alcohol in their desserts will fall in love with the Mini Snowskin champagne mooncake with ganache centre. This is quite potent, as the alcohol content reaches 12.5%. Savor it slowly to enjoy the intricacies.
Chocolate addicts will relish the dark chocolate snowskin mooncakes, where Valrhona chocolate is brilliantly merged with sea salt, peanut butter, banana bits and feuilletine. A sprinkle of gold dust adds to the luxe factor of this treat.
